App development

Have you come up with a brilliant idea and want help bringing it to life? Or do you already have a service where an app would be an excellent support for your users?

Either way, we have developers, UX specialists, and designers who can help you with the app development your idea needs.

What we’ve done

CloudBerry Care has apps where staff at nursing homes receive alerts from users’ smartwatches about changes in heart rate or if someone leaves the premises (geofencing). Bluetooth keys help both users and staff open the correct doors and medicine cabinets while ensuring the wrong ones stay locked.

For Ourliving, we created an app that allows homeowners to access all the classic information from a physical binder directly on their phones.

We work with both Flutter and native development—each with its own strengths. But we also create progressive web apps (PWAs).

What is a Progressive Web App?

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that behaves just like a regular app but is installed via the web rather than through an app store. It appears as a shortcut on your home screen, just like any other app.

For example, it can:

  • Work offline
  • Launch from a home screen icon
  • Run in full-screen mode
  • Receive and display push notifications
  • Send system-level push notifications, even without an internet connection

But that’s not all—the strengths of the web remain intact. You can link directly to the app and launch it without ever visiting an app store or downloading anything.

Since Progressive Web Apps aren’t distributed through a controlling third party (read: Apple or Google), there’s no strict definition. Many definitions exist, but they are varied and flexible—just like the web itself.

At a bare minimum, a PWA should:

  • Include a Web App Manifest
  • Handle offline (or “lie-fi”) scenarios using a Service Worker

There are more detailed checklists available, but for the end user, the two points above are more than enough.

What does “Progressive” mean?

The word “Progressive” highlights two things. First, it refers to how the website progressively starts behaving more and more like an app. In other words, it evolves from being a webpage you visit via a URL to becoming an application with push notifications that launches from a home screen icon.

Second, it means that the app or site experience improves the more capable your browser is. For instance, Safari on iOS doesn’t support push notifications or service workers. But it’s still possible to create a fast-loading, full-screen experience that launches from a sleek icon and includes some offline support.
