What’s the real difference?
“Digitization” became a popular term a few years ago. It can describe the transition from one way of doing business to another, more digital, way. We often explain it by comparing it to industrialization—the shift from an agricultural/craftsman-based society to an industrial one.
Digitization, in that sense, is the transition from an industrial/service-based society to a… more efficient industrial/service-based society.
But.
Let’s say you work at a photo agency. You have hundreds of thousands of carefully sorted photo negatives. Finding and selling images to clients is labor-intensive, no matter how organized your archive is. So you think it would be convenient if both your index and the images were digital.
In other words, you want to digitize your photo negatives. Digitization is an important component of your broader digital transformation. Alternatively, you could say that one step in your digital transformation is the digitization of your photo archive.
Neither term is more “correct” than the other. One may roll off the tongue more easily, while the other might be clearer but a bit more rigid. What matters is taking control of your digital transformation or digitization—because it affects every company, just like industrialization once did.
