What’s the difference between a traditional CMS and a headless CMS?

A headless CMS is essentially a regular CMS—but with one major difference: it doesn’t render any HTML or CSS. In other words, a headless CMS isn’t a specific product, but rather an implementation style where any CMS is accessed and managed via an API.

Your CMS shouldn’t be the center of the universe

What does that mean? As the name suggests, a headless CMS is “decoupled” from the frontend rendering. That means the user experience isn’t constrained by which CMS you’ve chosen.

One common misconception is that headless CMS requires a special kind of CMS. That’s not the case. Any CMS can be made headless—but some are better suited for it or come with headless features out of the box.

For example, we’ve built and launched headless websites for Skånemejerier, Resurs Bank, Atos Medical, and a global developer portal for a Japanese consumer tech company—all using WordPress as the CMS. And naturally, our own website (the one you’re reading right now) is headless too.

To summarize, here are a few key advantages of going headless:

  • Full control over rendering enables faster pages
  • Decoupling content from structure makes it easier to present information differently across various parts of a website
  • It’s easier to tailor content for multiple channels
  • External data can be fetched and published more seamlessly
  • It’s a must-have in an API-first architecture

What We Do

We recently launched over 100 websites for Orkla’s brands and supported Atos Medical with 23 national websites as well as an international .com site. We also have a long-standing relationship with Resurs Bank, having built at least five different versions of their Scandinavian website over the years.

When you choose us as your partner, you can count on getting a flexible solution—headless or not. We’ll be by your side for the long run, because we take ongoing maintenance and follow-up SEO seriously.
